How to Use This Calculator

Proper attic ventilation extends roof life and cuts energy bills. Our calculator applies the IRC 1/150 rule to find the net free area you need, then splits it across intake and exhaust vents.

  1. Measure the attic floor area (length x width)
  2. Select your vent system type
  3. Enter values in the calculator
  4. Round vent counts up and match soffit intake to exhaust NFA

Balance & Short-Circuit Risk
Mixing power vents with ridge vents short-circuits airflow. AI flags mixed systems and recommends a single, consistent ventilation strategy.

1/150 vs 1/300 Rule
The 1/300 ratio is allowed with a proper vapor barrier. AI checks whether your assembly qualifies for the reduced ventilation allowance.

Intake Priority
Undersized intake starves exhaust vents. Target 50-60% intake and 40-50% exhaust NFA so the system draws from soffits, not living space.

Calculation Formula

NFA (sq ft) = Attic area / 150 Intake NFA = NFA / 2 Exhaust NFA = NFA / 2 Vent count = ceil(Exhaust NFA / 0.5) (0.5 sq ft is the NFA of a typical roof vent)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 1/150 rule for attic ventilation?
The IRC 1/150 rule requires 1 square foot of net free vent area for every 150 square feet of attic floor. A 1,000 sq ft attic needs about 6.7 sq ft of total NFA, split evenly between intake and exhaust.
Should intake and exhaust ventilation be balanced?
Yes. A balanced system has equal intake and exhaust NFA. Slightly more intake than exhaust (50/50 to 60/40) is ideal so exhaust vents don't pull conditioned air from the living space.
Can I mix power vents with ridge vents?
No. Mixing power vents with passive ridge or turtle vents causes the powered vent to short-circuit, pulling air from the nearest passive exhaust instead of drawing from the intake soffit.
