Roof Vent Calculation Per Square Foot

Attic ventilation is sized off net free area, and the rule is simple: one square foot of net free area per 150 square feet of attic floor. The mistakes come from what people plug into it — roof square footage, roofing squares and the house footprint are all the wrong numbers. This guide covers the IRC rule, the 1/300 exception, NFA ratings by vent type, and a worked example.

The rule: one square foot of NFA per 150 square feet

The International Residential Code sets minimum attic ventilation at 1/150 of the attic floor area expressed as net free area, or NFA. Crucially, the input is the attic floor — the horizontal area of the ceiling below — not the sloped roof surface and not the roofing "squares" a contractor quoted you. A steep roof has far more roof area than attic area, and sizing off roof area is the most common over-ventilation error.

A widely used 1/300 exception halves that, but only in two cases: a Class I or II vapor retarder on the warm-in-winter side of the ceiling, or where 40% to 50% of the NFA sits in high vents at least 3 ft above the eaves and the balance is at the eaves. Many departments enforce 1/150 regardless, so confirm locally.

NFA is not the hole you cut

Net free area is the free air passage after you subtract everything that obstructs it: the louvers, the insect screen, the weather baffles and the mesh that keeps wasps out. A vent with a 60 sq in gross opening might rate only 40 to 45 sq in of NFA. Manufacturers publish an NFA figure for every product and that is what you size with; guessing from the opening leaves you 25% to 50% short.

Worked example: a 1,500 sq ft attic

Take a single-story home with a 1,500 sq ft attic floor. Total NFA is 1,500 / 150 = 10 sq ft, which is 1,440 sq in. Splitting that evenly gives 720 sq in of intake and 720 sq in of exhaust.

For exhaust, a shingle-over ridge vent rates about 14 to 18 sq in of NFA per linear foot. Using 18, you need 720 / 18 = 40 linear feet. For intake, a standard 16 x 8 inch soffit vent rates 50 to 60 sq in, so at 56 you need 720 / 56 ≈ 13 vents, rounded up. That is the whole calculation — and it is why a house with almost no soffit overhang needs a different intake strategy, such as a drip-edge or over-fascia vent, rather than more ridge vent.

One hard rule: do not combine a ridge vent with gable-end vents on the same attic. The gable vents short-circuit the airflow path and the ridge stops pulling from the soffits, so pick one exhaust strategy and let it work. Powered attic fans are rated in CFM rather than NFA and need enough intake to feed them, or they depressurize the house and can back-draft a naturally vented water heater.

Common mistakes that defeat the calculation

Insulation blocking the soffits is the most common failure: the vents are sized correctly on paper and then buried under blown-in cellulose. Baffles, also called rafter vents, hold a clear air channel above the insulation at every bay. Exhaust that badly exceeds intake is the second: without enough intake, the exhaust pulls conditioned air from the living space, raising energy bills and potentially back-drafting combustion appliances.

When these rules do not apply

Unvented or "hot roof" assemblies change the picture. Spray closed-cell foam against the underside of the roof deck, or a cathedral ceiling with no attic, and the 1/150 rule is not the governing requirement.
