How to Finish a Concrete Slab Like a Pro
Pouring the concrete is only half the job; the finish is what you walk on for the next 30 years. A clean slab comes from doing each step in the right order and at the right moment, not from rushing or from fancy tools. The sequence is always the same: screed to level, bull-float to close the surface, edge and cut control joints before the concrete sets, then trowel to the sheen you want, and cure. This guide walks the full sequence with the timing and tools that separate a pro finish from a pitted one.
Tools you need before the truck arrives
Have everything on site before the concrete shows up — you cannot pause a pour to shop. At minimum: a straight screed board, a bull float on a handle, a steel hand float, an edger, a groover (jointing tool), a magnesium or steel trowel, and a curing blanket or sealer. For larger slabs, a power bull float and a walk-behind trowel machine save your knees.
Step 1: screed to level
As soon as the concrete is placed and roughly struck off, drag a straight screed board across the forms in a sawing motion. This sets the top plane and embeds aggregate just below the surface. Do not overwork it; screeding is about level, not smoothness. Fill any low spots the screed reveals with fresh concrete and re-screed.
Step 2: bull-float
While the bleed water is still rising, pass a bull float over the whole surface to flatten ridges left by the screed and push the coarse aggregate down. Float too early and you trap water; too late and the surface skins over and tears. The cue is when foot prints barely hold a 1/4-inch impression. For a broom or exposed-aggregate finish, stop after the bull float — no steel trowel.
Step 3: edge and cut control joints
Run an edger along every form to round the top edge so it resists chipping, then cut control joints with a groover. Joints should be about one-quarter of the slab thickness deep and spaced no more than 2-3 times the thickness in feet (a 4-inch slab: joints 1 inch deep, every 8-12 feet). Step 4: trowel to the finish you want
For a smooth interior slab, wait until the surface can bear your weight with only a slight impression, then steel-trowel in overlapping passes. Each pass should be drier than the last; the final pass gives the hard, dense sheen. For exterior slabs, skip the steel trowel and broom-finish instead for slip resistance. Do not steel-trowel a slab that will see weather — a sealed, slick surface spalls in freeze-thaw.
Step 5: cure
Curing is the most skipped and most important step. Concrete gains strength from moisture reacting with cement, so keep it damp and protected for at least 5-7 days. Use a curing blanket, periodic misting, or a liquid cure-and-seal. Skimping on cure cuts strength and invites dusting and surface cracks. In hot or windy weather, start curing as soon as the surface is hard enough not to mark.

Common finishing mistakes
