How to Calculate Roof Pitch Multiplier

What the pitch notation means

Roof pitch in the US is written as rise over run. The rise is how many inches the roof goes up over a 12-inch horizontal run. So a "6/12 pitch" means the roof climbs 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal travel. The run is always 12 by convention; the rise is what tells you the steepness. A 3/12 is a shallow walkable roof; a 12/12 is a 45-degree angle. The pitch multiplier is the number that converts the home's horizontal footprint to the actual slanted roof surface.

The geometry

The slanted length of a single rafter is the hypotenuse of a right triangle whose legs are the run (12 in) and the rise (the rise in inches). Using the Pythagorean theorem:

How to measure pitch from the ground

You can measure pitch with nothing more than a level and a tape measure. Pick a rafter tail at the eave, hold a 12-inch level horizontally against the underside, and measure straight up from the 12-inch mark to the underside of the rafter. That vertical distance is the rise:

  • Inches up at the 12-inch mark = rise / 12 (so 6 inches up = 6/12 pitch).
