How Much Does It Cost to Paint a 10x10 Room
A 10 by 10 foot room is the smallest space that still contains a full set of painting decisions: four walls, one ceiling, a door, a window, and baseboard. That makes it a useful yardstick, because almost every painter prices a small bedroom from the same mental template and the differences between bids come from scope rather than from the room itself.
The room, converted into surface area
Floor area is 100 square feet, but painters work from wall area. A 10 by 10 room has a 40 foot perimeter, so at an 8 foot ceiling there are 320 square feet of wall before openings. A door removes about 20 square feet and a window 15, leaving roughly 285 square feet of paintable wall. The ceiling adds another 100 square feet of overhead work, which is slower per square foot than the walls.
Paint is sold by the gallon, so the practical answer is two gallons, about $70 to $110 for a mid-grade interior paint. A gallon of paint covers roughly 350 to 400 square feet per coat on a smooth, primed wall, which is why a single small room rarely justifies buying a five-gallon pail.
Price by scope: four common quotes
The single biggest driver of a 10 by 10 quote is what is included. Ask every painter which of these four packages they are bidding, because the spread is larger than the spread between contractors.
| Scope | Typical 2026 price | Time on site | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walls only, two coats | $300-$550 | 4-6 hours | Ceiling and trim left as-is |
| Walls plus ceiling | $450-$750 | 6-8 hours | Ceiling white in flat or ceiling paint |
| Walls, ceiling, baseboard | $550-$850 | 1 day | Trim brushed semi-gloss |
| Full room, door and window | $600-$1,000 | 1-1.5 days | Includes door slab on both faces |
| DIY materials only | $80-$180 | 1 weekend | Paint, primer, tape, rollers, trays |
A room that has been painted in the last few years usually only needs a light scuff and one finish coat over a sound existing coating, which pushes a bid toward the bottom of each range. A room with a dark color on the walls, wallpaper residue, or patched drywall pushes toward the top, because primer and an extra coat become necessary.
Where the money actually goes
Labor is 70 to 80 percent of a professional interior quote, and material is the rest. That ratio is why the paint brand barely moves the total while access and prep can swing it by a third.
| Line item | Typical cost, 10x10 room | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Paint, two gallons mid-grade | $70-$110 | 15-20% |
| Primer and patch compound | $15-$45 | 3-6% |
| Tape, plastic, rollers, trays | $15-$40 | 2-4% |
| Labor: prep, mask, move furniture | $90-$180 | 20-25% |
| Labor: brush and roll | $180-$380 | 45-55% |
What pushes a small-room price up
- Ceiling height. Above 9 feet the crew needs taller ladders and works noticeably slower, typically adding 15 to 30 percent.
- Drywall repair. Patching nail pops, cracks and old anchors adds $50 to $150 on its own.
- Extra colors. An accent wall or a two-tone scheme adds cutting-in time and is usually quoted as an add-on.
- Dark to light. Covering a saturated color with a pale one needs a tinted primer or a third coat.
- Occupied space. Working around furniture and a family adds 10 to 20 percent, mostly in masking and moving.
- Minimum job charge. Many painters have a one-day minimum of $400 to $700, which can make a single small room look expensive per square foot.
Two rooms are cheaper than one, twice
Small rooms carry a fixed overhead of setup, masking and cleanup that does not scale with wall area. A painter who is already on site for one bedroom can add a second 10 by 10 room for roughly $200 to $400, or about half the cost of a standalone job, because the drop cloths, ladders and tray liners are already out. If two or three bedrooms need work, get one quote for all of them rather than three separate appointments.
DIY or hire it out
Rolling a single small bedroom is among the most achievable DIY projects there is: one ladder, one roller, one cutting-in brush and a weekend. The materials for walls only land near $80 to $120 including tape and tray liners, against a professional quote in the several hundreds. What the labor line buys is speed, clean cut lines at the ceiling, and someone else's insurance if the trim gets dripped. If the ceiling is included or the finish has to be flawless before a sale, hiring is usually the better trade. To compare the two for your own room, put the measurements through the Painting Cost Calculator, and for siding or fences switch to the Exterior Paint Calculator.
