What "cure" actually means

Cure is the chemical reaction between Portland cement and water that turns a pour from a thick soup into rock. The reaction is not drying — it needs moisture present for weeks, not days. As long as you keep the concrete damp, the reaction continues; let it dry out and you stop gaining strength. The strength curve flattens out around 28 days under typical conditions, but concrete continues to gain small amounts of strength for a year or more.

What the code says (ACI 318)

The American Concrete Institute's ACI 318 Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete is the reference most US building departments adopt. ACI 318 lets a builder remove forms once concrete is self-supporting (typically 5 days in normal weather) and allows construction loads once compressive strength reaches at least 65% of f'c. When can you frame?

Cold weather slows it down

Cement hydration slows dramatically as temperatures drop. A 50°F pour reaches 7-day strength slower than a 70°F pour of the same mix. At 40°F concrete roughly doubles the time to the same strength; below 32°F the reaction nearly stops unless the mix is dosed with an accelerator or the slab is heated with blankets. ACI 306 recommends keeping concrete above 50°F for at least the first 3 days.

Hot weather

Hot weather accelerates early strength, but it also evaporates mix water too quickly, leading to shrinkage cracks and a weaker surface. Above 90°F you need ice water in the mix, retarding admixtures, or wet curing that starts immediately. A 90°F slab may hit 7-day strength in 4-5 days, but cracking risk rises sharply without good curing.

Confirm strength before framing

  • Lab-cured cylinders: the standard evidence path. A testing lab casts cylinders at the pour and breaks them at 7 and 28 days; many building departments require this for structural footings.
  • Rebound (Schmidt) hammer: a non-destructive field check; quick and cheap but only an estimate, not a substitute for a lab test on critical work.

Cure mistakes that cost strength

  • Drying out: the #1 residential cure failure. Water the slab or cover with curing compound; otherwise strength drops 30-50%.
  • Loading too early: framing on day 1 leaves deep footprints and may over-stress the slab.
