Pricing a concrete block wall comes down to three quantities: how many blocks, how much mortar, and how much grout goes into the cores. Get those right and the cost estimate follows directly. Block count: the 1.125 factor

A standard concrete masonry unit is nominally 8 inches high by 16 inches long, which includes the 3/8-inch mortar joint. That face measures 8 x 16 = 128 square inches, or 0.889 square feet. Inverting gives the factor every mason keeps in their head:

Subtract openings over about 10 square feet, but do not bother subtracting small ones — the cutting waste around an opening roughly cancels the blocks you save. For 12-inch-high blocks the factor drops to 0.75 per square foot; for 4-inch-high units it rises to 2.25.

Whether you grout every cell or only the reinforced ones is the single biggest swing in material cost. A fully grouted 8-inch wall uses roughly four times the concrete of a partially grouted one. Retaining walls and anything load-bearing generally require more grouting; a freestanding garden wall usually does not.

The footing is easy to overlook. A block wall over about 3 feet tall needs a continuous footing roughly twice the wall width and below local frost depth, and that concrete is a real line item.

Block vs. brick vs. poured concrete
